Long Eaton High Street takes more shop closure hits

You will all no doubt be aware that Peacocks Group is under Administration and that KPMG who are handling the situation are seeking buyers for the chain. While I hope this is successful and saves the stores, it puts our High Street store in danger.

Long Eaton's branch of Superdrug to close in June this year
Following on from a lead I received yesterday, I contacted our Bon Marche store directly and was told that the store would not be closing, however "Sun", who have recently bought out the chain have confirmed that they will be closing approximately 160 stores throughout the country.
In more bad news, I have confirmed that Long Eaton's Superdrug store is due to close in June this year. The press office said that the nearest store to Long Eaton with a pharmacy will be in Beeston from that point onwards.
A little good news, I hope, is that the Deputy Manager at Burtons, also on the High Street, said rumours that the branch was to close were unfounded. Let's hope this is the case.
It would be such a shame to see our High Street die any more than it already has and I urge you to support the local retailers as much as possible.

Am I the only one who can see where this is leading?
The purchasing power of the large supermarkets have driven down prices [you are perfectly right there! and look what that power is doing to our diary farmers and the price they get for their milk, does the price of animal feed go down to off set their meager profit? No it doesn't.
Soon this country will have no diary farmers left and all our milk will come from abroad in large tankers like the way the oil industry transport their crude oil, is that what we want? Because in my opinion, that's the way it's going.
The large supermarkets will have such a grip of everything we purchase they will in time hike the prices up and when that happens all your friendly high street shops will be gone, only banks and charity shops will be left..

ReportYou'd have to ask the Council about that Bip, not being an official spokesperson myself ;) I personally think that the purchasing power of large supermarkets has driven prices down across the board and meant that most shoppers on average wages (or indeed below average) have little choice but to go where prices are cheaper and this has meant a lack of support for smaller shops and businesses across the country.

ReportPoint taken LEClare but didn't the council realise what would happen to our high street when they allowed Asda and Tesco's to move in, I for one, and I'm no expert, knew what would happen, after all its not nuclear science is it and you only have to look at other areas too, to see what destructive powers these two have had on the small shop keeper.
It has been suggested on other forum sites that some under handed dealings were afoot when planning permission was granted, I for one am not suggesting any such thing in this case but it does stand out a mile that these two large multi nationals were welcomed with open arms into Long Eaton with such ease and very little opposition ……
I believe too that ARGOS has a lot to answer for, for the decline of our high street.

ReportHi Guys, points taken but the article is about shops on Long Eaton High Street that are closing, not the ones that remain open.
For any interested parties, a list of dispensing chemists is available in the directory on this site, or by following this link http://tinyurl.com/czsgd8v

ReportOk Superdrug is going but there are many other dispensing chemists about, Boots has been mentioned but the one in ASDA hasn't, or has the two on Middle street opposite Asda and no doubt there are many others too to choose from which I haven't mentioned or know about. My nearest is the Manor chain here at Sawley, so you see losing Superdrug isn't such a big deal after all for joe public but I do feel for the staff that's losing their jobs.…
